Not all of us can afford the luxury of purchasing our offroad chariot of choice from the dealership floor. We therefore forgo the protection of factory warranties so making the right choice is extremely important.

4WD Sport and utility magazine just released some comprehensive tips to help pick your next 4WD but even with this sort of reference, if you don’t know what your looking for (we’re not all mechanics) you going to find yourself with a blank look on your face. And a potential disaster on your hands…

The number on thing I tell people when they ask for advice on buying a used 4X4 is if your asking for advice, then it’s essential you take someone along who knows what they’re looking at. And this doesn’t mean your friends friend the mechanic. It means someone who’s technically minded about 4X4’s.

Why? As there are certain things, as mentioned in the checklist above, that a normal mechanics not going to be looking for. Only a 4X4 enthusiast is going to able to give you the assistance you need.

Enjoy your off-roading!

this could not be more correct as i found out the hard way when buying my mk shorty i had a mate who is a mechanic to go and look at it for me he said it was fine engine was good all all…so after i paid for it i got it up here and got my uncle to have a look as well he is a 4wd enthusiast and new exatley wat to look for within 5 mins he found that the front shackle mounts were cracked the winch was wired incorrectley and that that 4wd did not work..i have now fixed all these problems but if had got my uncle to look at it before buying it i would have know wat i was getting myself into rather than just a mechanic..allways get someone who knows about the vechile and the problems that normally occur with it to look as they may find things a normal mechanic won’t.
