When you talk as much 4wd and I do, you can often get bogged down in Landcruiser this, Nissan that. Quite easily can you forget the wonderful and vast range of off-road vehicles available. It’s refreshing to speak to people Like Jon Chilton, who’s terrific Terracan is a fine example of the choices we off-roaders have.
Now the Hyundai Terracan is not everyones cup of tea, but you’d really struggle to find a better value for money 7-seater 4WD. Slip on a new set of rubber, a suspension kit, a few custom mods, and you’ve got a value for money truck, that can take it right up to the big boys. Jon Chilton tells us more about his Terrain Taming Terry…
One of the major things to take into account when selecting a winch for your 4×4 is the maximum static load, or line pull rating. This is the force that can be exerted by the first wrap of the cable on the drum, decreasing the torque on the winch by 12% for each successive wrap. For electric winches, the line pull, line speed, and current draw will tell how much weight can be pulled, how fast this weight can be pulled (in ft/min) and how many amps this effort will require. These figures are important when selecting a winch and should be advised by an expert in case you don’t know what’s best.
It’s a brave product manager to suggest to manufacturing execs a new model 4X4, and that was evident at the latest UK motor show, but that didn’t stop a few manufactures road-showing what will fill their 2009 4X4 lineup…
